OCR: ROBOTS IN FILM THE LAWS OF ROBOTICS INTERPLANETARY SPACECRAFT In 1977, George Lucas created a pair of highly popular robots, C3PO and R2D2-the comical and sometimes capricious friends of good-guy Luke Skywalker in the "Star Wars" series. Stanley Donen took the opposite tack in "Saturn 3" when he cast a robot in a romantic role (although this creature does turn out to be very dangerous). Then, Hollywood produced a new sci-fi happy ending with John Badham's 1986 film "Short Circuit." Number 5, the robot star of this film, was originally designed by the military to be a ruthless killer, but because of a short circuit, becomes very naive and affectionate. Meanwhile, another type of machine derived from robotics also made its film debut, in Michael Crichton's 1973 film "Mondwest"-the android. These synthetic or electronic creatures are generally designed to look exactly like real human beings so they won't be recognized. Of superior intelligence, androids are often dangerous, even for their makers. MARS BETAT
